Writing is something we are all familiar with, writing for self expression taps into the unconscious and helps us gain self insight. Journaling regularly your thoughts and feelings promotes self understanding.
Free writing is a great place to start, writing for a set amount of time, not censoring anything, no correcting spelling mistakes or pausing to think of something that comes. If nothing comes right away, write that! ‘I can’t think of anything to write..’ Start describing the room around you – something will come.
After you have written you can close the notebook and show nobody, shred it up, tear it into tiny pieces, paint over it or if you do have an accepting audience, share it.
A writing prompt I really enjoyed and will share today is from The Creative Connection Expressive Arts as Healing by Natalie Rogers – a wonderful woman who I will share the work of a lot!
The writing prompt, if you want to get started right away is – I feel like a diamond today, give yourself around 10-15 minutes to write a paragraph on what that sentence brings to you.
Before I started writing I had a little look up of diamond related information and facts, as I had a blank of – I don’t know anything about diamonds! I want the writing to be all you however here are a few pointers to get you going:
- Diamonds form 100 miles below ground and are carried to Earth’s surface by volcanic eruptions.
- They are the hardest natural substance, the only thing that can break a diamond is another diamond.
- In history, diamonds were believed to protect a wearer from danger and have healing properties.
‘ Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without’ – Confucius
Ok, so there are your warm up thoughts – let’s get to it, set a timer for 10 minutes, put the title at the top of the page – I feel like a diamond today and carry on writing!
It doesn’t matter if you simply have lined paper and a pen, you can use your journal or write around drawings and pictures – it’s up to you. This is a writing task, so get your pen and write something!
Let your writing sit for a moment and read over it. What points have you brought up about yourself? What comparisons did you make? Is there a glimmer of an empowering statement you can pick out? What do you identify most with as ‘a diamond’?
What I found from doing this task is that I identified with being raw and having imperfections though my beauty would still shine through regardless. I wrote that though I am fragile, I am also strong and that no matter what a diamond is still a diamond. It reminded me that I don’t have to stay hidden and undiscovered, I can come out and shine to people – be a gift.
Look over your piece again, what conclusions have you come to that you can use to get through an issue or use to motivate you in some way?
